She said WHAT?

I've learned a very valuable lesson over the last few days.  First let me tell you a secret about ME.  I am not one of those moms that *loves* to spend time in the classroom with her kids.  Nope!  I love when they go to school and I love when they come home.  So I don't spend a lot of time in the classes except party times.  Who doesn't love a party? The past few days I have spent a lot of time with the kids in their classrooms helping out the other moms.  WOW! I do not envy those teachers.  They work their butts off and it's a constant battle keeping the kids on task. Again, just another reason why I don't like going there.

Anyways, yesterday was my day to spend with Alexis in her classroom. When I arrived I was asked by at least 4 kids who I was.  It's exciting I guess when a mom walks in a room. Lex and a few friends had just finished decorating cupcakes.  I wanted to get a few pictures so I wandered off that way.  Lex had lost interest in me and went off playing with someone else.  One of the little girls at the table asked if she could ask me a question.  I said, "Of course you can!  She says, "Are you poor?"  I looked at her puzzled because #1 I had never been asked this and #2 I was taken off guard. I said to her, "what do you mean?"  The other little girl at the table with us felt the need to chime in now.  She looked at me and said, " You know… Do you live in a Big house or a small house? Do you wear nice clothes or dungy ones?" All I kept thinking was WOW! Where is this coming from.  I told her I was neither rich or poor and asked her where this thought came from.  She looked up at me with the most serious face and said, "Well Alexis says you live on the street!"  Really, I ask? Hmmmm….

I asked Alexis later on last night where exactly did she think we lived and why in the world would she tell someone we lived on the street? Of course the answer to that was, "I dunno!"  Grrr…

Needless to say this bothered me a little. Mostly it made me laugh hysterically.  When I laid down to go to bed last night I think I figured out where she got her story confused.  Last week I earned another "Mother of the Year" award when I told Brandon to straighten his attitude or else he would be living on the streets.  I guess I will change how I word things.   The shelf where I hang my special Mother awards is getting a little full lately!

Besides going to parties I did bring the teachers their gifts yesterday.  Each year I like to do a 12 days of Christmas for them.  This year it just wasn't in the cards due to poor planning on my part. They each did receive LOTS of gifties and probably more than 12 but I lumped it into one basket.

I made them lots of "thank you" cards, notecards and little trinkets to go inside the basket.  I hope they enjoy!

Time for me to work on another project.  I am going to try and scrapbook tonight.  WHOO HOO! It's been awhile.  I hope I have something to share.

  1. I think you should have told that little girl to look at the gorgeous basket of goodies you brought for the teacher…  THAT would have told her everything she needed to know 🙂 The basket was LOVELY and I can imagine how blessed and pleased the teachers felt!!  You rock!! 🙂

  2. What a fabulous basket you did!  Probably more work than the 12 days of Christmas!
That's funny tho,I can relate to your story about the other kids and telling your son to straighten out!  I just finished my teacher gifts last night for today, and I am still shopping and baking ….

  3. LOL at your funny story! I remember going to my nephew's Christmas party at school thinking "Man, this looks terrible, how can these teachers stand to do this!" I never dreamed I'd decide to be a teacher myself in the next few years! ha! I love your teacher gift basket, WOW! You are so thoughtful and I know how much those teachers appreciated it!

  4. How funny….. I know exactly where you are coming from.  I'm a substitute teacher and I get a million questions when I first enter a room.  I have subbed my daughters class and most of the kids know me now.  If I have learned anything….you answer the questions with the least amount of words as the kids can take them out of context very easily.

  5. "kids say the darndest things"; all the best for a beautiful holiday, travel safely & I'm looking foreword to another year of your blog……………………hugs, Susan (Atlantic Canada)

  6. Kim,
You should have told the kids you were very rich without explaining.  I always told mine that as long as we had a roof over our heads, food in the fridge, clothes to wear and most importantly each other's love we were extremely rich.    Love the teacher's basket…it's awesome.  I'm a teacher…can I have one?  🙂  Love ya!

  7. You have the most wonderful family stories to share with us!   You could be a writer as well as the fabulous stamper and teacher that you are in the stamping world.   Lucky teachers, I'm sure they will love your gifts!     I'm sure many of us have similar "Mother of the Day/Week/Month/Year" awards hanging around – even though our kids may be adults, we still get them – LOL!        Happiest of Holiday whishes to you and your family!

  8. I loved your story!  I am a teacher and I always tell the parents of my students that, "If you believe half of what your children tell you about me, I'll believe half of what they tell me about YOU!"  Kids are SO FUNNY – you've got to love them.
I'm sure the teachers really appreciate the time you put into those gifts.  How thoughtful of you!
Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year!
