Technique Lovers- Dragonfly Dreams

Do you love trying new stamping techniques? What about old techniques we tend to forget about?

At first glance of the Dragonfly Dreams stamp set my first thought was techniques.  It instantly reminded me of collage style creating.  As soon as I pulled it out to use, that was my goal.

Then the reality of creating happens and the course of creating changed.  Now I couldn’t stop thinking about an old favorite technique, masking!

Masking Technique, Dragonfly Dreams, Stampin' Up!

It Doesn’t Always Have to Be New!

Here’s the thing, many times our crafty brains are always trying to come up with the next big idea or the next great technique but the reality is we miss out on the oldies that are tried and true.

Masking is one technique that always brings that WOW factor when I’m stamping.  Like, “OH MY GOSH… I created this!” These are the ideas that many times I say to myself… “Been there done that… need to try something new!”

I’m so glad I let my creative brain go with the flow.

While the Masking technique is and “oldie” it may just as well be a “new” technique to others.

Today I’m sharing an EASY card using a few post-it notes and a beautiful stamp set, Dragonfly Dreams.

Let’s get started!

Grab Your Supplies

Here are a few supplies to grab so you can create this card:

  • Dragonfly Dreams stamp set
  • Whisper White cardstock 4″ x 5-1/2″
  • Post-it Notes (I used a large size post-it note 6 x 8- you can find in any office supply store)
  • Ink Pad
  • Sponge

Create It!

Below I created a step by step tutorial on the masking technique.

Here are a few tips that might help you.

Masking Technique, Dragonfly Dreams, Stampin' Up!

  • Tear the Post-it note in half which will create a dynamic look for your background.  Place over your Whisper White cardstock.
  • Keep your fingers placed on the post-it note when you are sponging. This will help so that the ink doesn’t creep under the post-it note.
  • Stamp directly over the area you sponged while the post-it note is still in place to create a more dramatic background.  I used So Saffron classic ink pad.

Once you have created your masked background, stamp the dragonfly and greeting.

I added the dragonfly die cut over my stamped dragonfly to create a 3D look.  I love the details of the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits Dies.

Lastly, a few other embellishments for the card were added such as a doily, Metallic Gold Enamel Dots and a small strip of the Cupcakes & Carousels Designer Series Paper Pack (one of my favorites!!)

Grab the Bundle!

Whether the technique is old or new, the Dragonfly Dreams stamp set will offer many ways you can stamp with it.  This gorgeous stamp set is part of a bundle where you can purchase the stamp set and thinlits together, saving you 10% on your purchase.

If you are a technique lover, make sure to see THIS technique using framelits.  I loved creating this card.

How To Create Felt Ribbon From Cardstock

How To Create Felt Ribbon From Cardstock

Do you love to learn new techniques? Today I’m dying to share this one.

If you love to add embellishments to cards this technique will be quick and easy.  Even better, it will use a staple product in your craft room.

Create Felt Ribbon, Stampin' Up!

Over the years I’ve created a few videos sharing ideas and tricks on different ways to use ribbon.  No doubt that I’m a huge fan of ribbon and ways to use it.

However, there are times when I’m looking for a certain color or style and I don’t have it.

Creating your own Felt Ribbon out of cardstock is simple and perfect in this type of situation.

If you don’t have a coordinating color of ribbon that fits the style of the card you are creating, hang tight.  There is a solution.

How to Create Felt Ribbon

I love the feel and texture of felt.  The attraction for me is clearly the softness when I touch it.

If you look closely below you will see the pool party cardstock created to look like a ribbon under the tag.

Today I have a short video on how to create this look using a simple piece of cardstock and the Hang Your Stocking stamp set.

Grab a piece of cardstock that measures 1/2″ x 4″ and a bone folder.  Now watch the video and start creating your own felt ribbon from cardstock.

Omitting Technique!

Omitting Technique!

Hold me back because today I am pretty darn excited about something- Omitting Technique.

Well, it’s actually not anything NEW, but I think you will like the card I’m sharing today and the video that goes along with it.

First, let me tell you I’m not a huge fan of Poinsettia’s.  The reason is not a secret it’s honestly because I cannot for the life of me keep one of these plants alive.  I have a pretty green thumb, but not when it comes to this plant.  They hate me and quickly shrivel up and die.

Funny thing is, I buy a new one every single year only to watch it die and meet the trash can if I can savor it until Christmas day.  Sometimes it doesn’t make it that long.

One thing I cannot kill is a stamped Poinsettia.  HOWEVER, this stamp set was giving me a few fits.  That’s southern for PROBLEM!

The Reason for the Season stamp set is a beautiful stamp set on page 31 of the Holiday catalog and even has the Festive Flower Builder Punch that coordinates with it.  Perfect bundle to make beautiful 3D Poinsettia flowers.

But… I didn’t have time to really mess with the punch the other day and I wanted to use the stamp set.  I had a couple of ideas in mind but nothing was coming together right.

Then I created this….

Omitting Technique, Reason for the Season stamp set, Stampin' Up!

How it all started!

This card was totally inspired by a BIG FAT mistake. The irony is quite telling!

I was stampin’ along when all of a sudden I decided to stamp the leaves in Garden Green.  For whatever reason it looked completely off.  I almost dumped this entire card into the trash… but then I got an idea.

I decided to cover up my big color mistake and cover it up by creating the focal point at the top left of the card.

Omitting Technique, Reason for the Season stamp set, Stampin' Up!

All of a sudden this card just came together and isn’t it perfect that Jesus is the center? Right where HE should be.  This is where the omitting technique came into play.

No, we are not omitting Jesus. We are making Him front and center just as He should be in our lives.

If you are unsure what I mean by the Omitting technique, watch the quick video on it today.

Omitting Technique, Reason for the Season stamp set, Stampin' Up!

Bringing it all together!

Just as the stamp set title says, Jesus is the reason for the season.  I might have just created my personal Christmas card for this year.  This sweet simple card is very duplicatable for doing mass production and I love that my focal point draws you right to Jesus- the reason for the season!

The omitting technique is another inspiring way of looking at the beautiful Stampin’ Up! stamps we have to offer.  Take a look at the sets you have in your stamp room and see what other stamp sets you could use the omitting technique on.  You will be quite surprised.

You can see all the products I used for this project below.

Have an awesome Monday and make something pretty.

Staying Put & A Winner!

Staying Put & A Winner!

I’m not sure where to start today.  I’m completely humbled from all of your comments.  I want to answer all of them…. it might take a little while but give me time.
I’m blown away by how many of you took the time to comment.  I totally get busy lives, but your comments were so kindly written… I’m truly thankful.

I guess the first thing I want to say is… I’m not going anywhere and blogging will always continue. Although there are many things I want to quit lately, blogging isn’t one of them.  It was great to hear from you because sometimes the silence is deafening.   However, I also know how busy life gets.  I pray everyday for it to slow down a bit and nothing has changed.  I’ll continue to pray about that.

I was also relieved to see so many still read blogs.  I was really taken back when I had read that article.  I can see how other social media becomes popular because it’s faster and especially with today’s  craziness it makes life easier.  As one of you stated in  your comments it social media tends to lack the personal side.  Lord knows I have shared my own dirty laundry with you, a few times.  You’ve been up close and personal with me a few times.

Truth be known, I want to write daily.  I have piles of stuff waiting to be shared with you.  I’m not kidding.  Some days it’s not a lack of time to write as it is the heart to write.  I love love love to share with you.  Honestly, I wish you were all here to actually stamp with me.  Wouldn’t that just be the best time EVER???

Over the last few months I think it’s been the hardest since Russ had his stroke.  We’re trying to find our way into a new normal.  Plus dealing with the onset of teenagers… let me stop there.  Don’t get me wrong, we have everything to be grateful for.  BUT… finding that new normal is SO not easy when you know how much of the normal has changed. It’s dealing with that change.  Somedays are so easy and others… well let’s just say it’s not.  It can be a very dark place.  A place I’m not use to and a place I don’t like.

Of course if it wasn’t for my faith I’m sure my life would look much different.  Let me say this too… there are days I wonder where God is.  Why did this happen? What is He trying to teach me? Where can He use me? All of these things are constantly going on in my tiny little brain.  Scary, huh?? It’s when I ask God these things something crazy divine happens and I know once again He is right here with me and these crazy people in my house.

Again, I’m truly thankful you are reading.  I am thankful that you love to create.  It’s a shared passion that you and I have.  I’m here to share it with you.  I have something pretty to share today and I even have a VIDEO.  (If you fell out of your chair I hope you are okay…)

Now to pretties… and a WINNER.

Please give a BIG congrats to Peggy as she is our Blog Candy winner.  Peggy, please email me by clicking the contact me button at the top right with your snail address.  I’ll get some goodies off to you.

Butterfly Basics, Patina Technique, Stampin' Up!

When I created this card I stumbled upon a little technique. I’m sure some one genius came up with this already as mine was purely a mistake.  But.. I loved the look after it was finished.

It reminds me of Patina.  That aged look you can get on wood or metal. Kinda greenish, typically more of a bronze look… but today I’ll take it in GOLD.

Butterfly Basics, Patina Technique, Stampin' Up!

You can see how I created it below in this short video…

Butterfly Basics, Patina Technique, Stampin' Up!
 Oh, and before we go….

When do teenagers care about the way they look? Especially boys? Thursday night Brandon went to bed with a t-shirt on backwards.  Friday when he came home from school he was wearing the same t-shirt still backwards.  Help me baby Jesus!!  The good news is he smelled great.  He loves his fancy cologne.  See, always something positive.

Bokeh Technique & Mardi Gras

Bokeh Technique & Mardi Gras

We celebrated big time this weekend!  It’s a celebration we typically do not celebrate and if I’m honest (which I will be) I’m not sure I understand the entire celebration…. Mardi Gras.

So we’ve never been to a Mardi Gras parade before but decided this weekend we would see what it’s all about.  Let’s just say I caught a few beads!

Bokeh Technique & Mardi Gras I’ve never seen anything like it.  Tons of beads being thrown off floats.  Moon Pies thrown in my face.  Stuffed animals, cups, trinkets… all being thrown.  We each came home with a ton of loot and a TON of beads.  I’m still not sure exactly what we celebrated except we had a great time as a family.  There were a few things I could of NOT seen and let’s just say I had a bit of explaining to do when we got to our car.  This is a BIG party and there are people who will do ANYTHING for beads.  I think Alexis summed it up best… “those girls are disgusting, mom!”  Yes. I’m proud.  Again, it was a fun time.

In other news I have a fun card to share.  Hope to have a video to go with this card SOON. I’m waiting on a piece of equipment to help my video process since I upgraded my phone last month.  Should be in this week and I’ll be in video mode once again.

Bokeh Technique

Typically I don’t do many techniques.  I loved this technique because I love it in photography.  When you can achieve bokeh in a photograph its AWESOME.  How exciting for a card that you can create?

Bokeh Technique, Simply Wonderful
This was a card we created in club this past week.  SO FUN! It’s a pop of color and lots of fun layers.  I love the result.

Bokeh Technique, Simply Wonderful
I’m sure it doesn’t matter how many colors you choose to use but for my card I chose 3.  Coastal Cabana, Hello Honey and Pistachio Pudding.  I love these colors for spring.

Bokeh Technique, Simply Wonderful
You can only see a hint of a new product I used but I have to tell you about.  It’s the Birthday Bash Designer Washi Sheets. It’s a big ole Washi Tape that you can cut, punch, or die cut the way you want.  I love it.  You can see a strip I used under my die cut stars.  It was just a sliver but I loved seeing it through the negative space of the stars.  PERFECT.

The stamp set is the Simply Wonderful stamp set from Sale-a-Bration.  Great fonts are in this perfect greeting set.  I loved this greeting because it’s playful and thankful.  Place an Online Order in my store of $50 and this set can be yours FREE.

I hope your weekend was spectacular.  It’s a long weekend for us thanks to Presidents Day.  For all my northern friends… stay warm. I’ve been thinking of you with all the cold and snow.  YIKES.
