Working in Quadrants- Digital Scrapbooking

Working in Quadrants- Digital Scrapbooking

Heather and I have a really fun digital challenge and it’s totally different.

Have you ever been stuck when starting a layout and not sure where or what to start with?  Heather had a grand idea to work in quadrants.

When I started this layout below I began with a white background.  I then added four photos in each corner and placed them where I thought I would like to design around them.  If you ever watched me create on in MDS I would make your eyes cross!  I have a tendency to move elements all over the place when creating.

This is when the fun part of designing this layout started.  I treated each photo like it was a mini layout.  Just working around the photo and adding layers of elements. The key was keeping elements that coordinated and I kept them in the color scheme for the entire layout.

Another key element in creating this layout and using elements from several digital kits was turning the photos into black and white.  The color photos would of been clash city!

I encourage you to give this challenge a go.  When finding elements try these tips to make creating even more fun:

  • recolor your elements to coordinate the layout
  • crop stamp brushes to make a better fit for a title or layer
  • use elements from other kits to see how they coordinate together.

Digital Scrapbooking Kits with a TWIST

If you are digital scrapbooker you probably own a ton of digital scrapbooking kits.  Today I want to share a new challenge- Digital Scrapbooking Kits with a TWIST.

The twist is using a kit for something other than it was intended for.  I have an example of this in my layout below.  I used the new Everyday Birthday Wishes kit to digital scrapbook our latest weekend adventure with Brandon… his first time getting stitches.

My Digital Studio, One Kit Challenge

This particular kit is perfect for birthdays or other celebrations but I loved the colors, and the word stamp brushes most of all.  All of the words are SVG files so you can use them with an e-Cutter such as a Silhouette Cameo.  I loved how this playful kit worked great for my pictures detailing the ER visit.

I tried to stick with just the kit but one of my favorite things about My Digital Studio is finding digital art that coordinates with my layout outside of a kit.  Sometimes it’s a challenge but when you use the Global Search tool it makes finding other digital art easy with keywords.

You may be wondering what my lil’ man did? Once again everything was just fine and in a split second I found myself on my way to the ER with Brandon.  He was so excited when he came home from school on Friday.  He couldn’t wait to get in the woods and work on his fort.  He had just told me it’s the coolest fort ever because it’s two stories.  I didn’t give it a second thought until he came running inside with blood dripping down his arm screaming for a band-aid.

One look at the laceration and I knew we were in for a new adventure with Brandon.  Let me just say that my Brandon has a big fear of needles.  Once he was told we were going to the ER and “stitches” could be in the plan a major freak out occurred.  Jeez.

Of course both grandma’s were here and also brought up if he had his Tetanus updated.  That freak out wasn’t better and made getting in the car a little more difficult.

Thankfully we had a fantastic female physician that worked with Brandon and calmed his nerves. She was amazing. His tetanus was up to date and three stitches made everything better.  Once it was all complete, Brandon was giddy.  It was funny hearing him telling the story of his new battle wound and how he survived.  Oh that boy!

It’s your turn to give this challenge a try.  The great part of this challenge is creating outside the box with your digital kits.

My Digital Studio, Digital Scrapbooking, Digital Sketch

This digital sketch worked perfect for a birthday picture I had of Russ.  Even better was journaling that he is 12 days older than me.  I try to get that in whenever I can.

Here are a few tips when creating this layout:

  • Remember that you can re-color embellishments.  The stars on this page are the woodcuts and  re-colored them.
  • The text at the top was created from a stamp brush.  I copied and pasted it across the top of the layout and then used my align tool to make sure the entire piece was aligned and spaced evenly.
  • Both Designer Series Papers used have the opacity in the 30’s so that the patterns do not overtake the photo.
  • The text “Smile, Birthday Boy” was cropped twice to change the way it went across the layout and one art element was deleted.

Easter Photography Ideas

Looking for Easter Photography Ideas.. I have a few to help you.

After going through a bunch of Easter pictures and layouts I noticed there was a common theme that I was scrapbooking. I’m sure you will know exactly what I’m talking about . . . coloring eggs, bunny baskets, kids hunting eggs, finding the golden egg.

Easter Photography, My Digital Studio, Digital Scrapbooking

For this layout I wanted to take a different approach AND a different photography scene. I decided to use three photos that were more silly than usual. The pictures were playful so I wanted to keep the layout just that—playful. I love that My Digital Studio has lots of fun digital art that worked perfect for my layout.

I did a lot of searching through my downloads to find paper patterns I thought would work with an Easter theme and loved recoloring them to match my layout. This is such a great tool in MDS.

One of my favorite things I added to this layout was the chicken wire overlay from Bunch of Backgrounds, and then I decreased the opacity so it wasn’t too bright to overshadow my other elements.

For the Easter eggs in the bottom right corner, I used the patterned egg from Easter Blossoms. I placed a Very Vanilla egg from Celebrate Easter behind each decorative egg to make the colors pop a little more.

Another fun digital art piece I added was the Paper Doilies. When placing them on your layout, make sure you adjust the drop shadow so that you can really see the paper doilies pop off the page. With just a little shadow under the doilies you can really get extensive texture for your layout or project. I love how real these look.

I can’t wait to create more digital Easter layouts this year while keeping in mind a few different photography shots to change things up a bit.

Easter Photography Ideas

Here are a few out of the box ideas to think of when photographing Easter shots:

  • Pics of the Easter shoes your kids wear
  • Easter décor in your home
  • Just the child’s hands decorating the eggs
  • Easter morning routine
  • Church you attend Easter morning
  • Easter traditions
  • The Perfect Outfit
  • Easter Sunrise

Frame It With A Twist

Frame It, Stampin' Up!, My Digital Studio

It’s time for another My Digital Studio challenge and this week you will learn t0 Frame It With a Twist!!

Typically we use frames on our layouts to make pictures stand out.  The challenge this week is to use digital frames in a different way.  You can frame anything but a picture.  Use frames to highlight journaling or the entire layout.  My Digital Studio has all kinds of frame digital art so you have GREAT options.

I decided to use three different frames on my layout and used them as embellishments instead of framing a picture.  I changed the colors to match within the layout using the “Match Color” Tool.  I love this tool because I can use colors from pictures or Designer Paper to match.

Another F.U.N. product I used on this layout was the Cork pieces from the Sale-a-Bration digital art you can earn.  I added little gems on the right upper side of the layout and then used the diamond cork pieces between the gems.  I loved how this turned out because I’ve struggled to use the cork pieces on my paper crafts so it was extra fun to use them on a digital layout.

Heather has created a fantastic layout this week as well. Make sure you check out her layout HERE.

I want to share a card I created this weekend that also uses the Cork from Sale-a-Bration. The cork is part of the Sweet Sorbet Accessory Pack that includes 10 yards each of Crispt Cantalope, Pool Party, and Summer Starfruit Twine.  I’ll be honest, I had a hard time creating with the cork pieces at first.  Once I started using them, the ideas rolled in.  I’ll be sharing a few of these cards this week so stayed tune.

Here is one of them-
