Strawberries- Could This Be Sweeter?

Strawberries- Could This Be Sweeter?

Strawberries are one of my kids favorites to snack on in our house.

I love watching Alexis go through the fridge when I’ve unloaded groceries and she yells… STRAWBERRIES!

You would think I was depriving my child but they are in the fridge ALL the time.

My love affair for the Apple of My Eye stamp set became even greater when I recently had seen a card created by one of my friends Erica Cerwin.  She created a strawberry from the pear image in the set and my instant reaction was, “She is a GENIUS!”

This is what I call thinking outside the box.

Well, I had to give it a whirl and I loved how it turned out.

Apple of My Eye

Strawberries, Apple of My Eye, Stampin' Up!

If you heard a loud giggle- it was me.  I knew I had strawberry designer paper from my Sweet Lil’ Things Designer Series Paper Pack.  It was a perfect match.

Strawberries, Apple of My Eye, Stampin' Up!

Create with Me!

To create the strawberry simply stamp the pear image (marked above) upside down.  I stamped 3 leaves (image marked above) and then trim each of the images using paper snips.  I used Watermelon Wonder for the strawberry and Cucumber Crush for the leaves.

Tips & Tricks

Here are a few tips & tricks to consider when creating this card.

  • Sponge around the edges of the leaves so you will see no white outline from trimming the leaves with scissors.  I use a Sponge Dauber since this is a smaller image I’m working with.
  • I stamped three leaves for my strawberry tops.
  • To create the lines on the strawberries I used my White Chalk Marker.  I love how this created a very soft look over the strawberries.
  • I had a hard time fitting my greeting onto the card so I wouldn’t take away from my focal image – strawberries. My solution was to stamp  the greeting onto Whisper White cardstock using Watermelon Wonder and then trim the words separate them.  This way I could create  a little banner.

Strawberries, Apple of My Eye, Stampin' Up!

  • I attached the greeting using Mini Glue Dots and curled the edges slightly to look more like a banner.  I love glue dots when I want to raise an image ever so slightly but not as much as a dimensional would.

A Couple Thoughts

If someone was to ask me which stamp set I’ve most enjoyed in the Occasions Catalog, hands down it would be this stamp set, Apple of My Eye.  It’s been a great set and insanely versatile.  That’s what I love most about it.  Remember, it’s on the retired list.

Teachers, they Deserve Appreciation!

Teachers, they Deserve Appreciation!

It’s that time of year when teachers deserve a little love and attention!!

I’m sure there are many of you that are passed this stage in life, but I bet there is a teacher you still know that could use a little love.

Now that my kids are teens I find it harder to thank all 14 teachers that they have.  Well, let me be honest and say the hard part is getting my kids to take the treats that I create.  At least for my son, he turns four shades of red when I tell him to give his teacher a gift.  <boys!>

We’ve had the privilege this year to adopt a High School with our Small Group from church.  Every holiday we’ve put my Stampin’ Up! tools to great use and made some of the cutest things.

Of course I ALWAYS forget to take pictures because I’m usually helping the kids work on the projects.

These tokens of appreciation are small but I know they can feel our love.  That’s the beauty of a handmade treasure.  It’s made with love.  Next week we will be hosting an ice cream social for them.  I know it will be fun.

Meanwhile…. I’m creating a few cards that my kids can take to their teachers.

Apple of My Eye

Teachers, Apple of My Eye, Stampin' Up!

I’m pretty sure we instantly think of teachers when we look at the stamp set, Apple of My Eye.  It does have the perfect teacher apple for pete’s sake.

I’ve mentioned before that this stamp set was a sleeper in the stacks of stamps on my shelf.  Behold one day I pulled it out and the ideas were endless.  This set became a favorite.

I just released my Stamps in the Mail using this stamp set and I was over the moon with the cards.  If you are interested in just purchasing the PDF, you can click HERE to purchase it.  6 cards, 6 videos.  I think you will love these cards.

Teachers, Apple of My Eye, Stampin' Up!

*Side Note* No, the cards are not all teacher related….  just sayin’.

Teachers, Apple of My Eye, Stampin' Up!

This card uses the Schoolhouse Designer Series Paper which keep in mind, is not all “Schoolhouse.”  This designer paper is bright and fun and has MANY uses outside of just school projects.  I know. I keep saying this…. but really.  It’s true.

The Bad News

Yes. There is a little bad news.  Much of what you see on this card is RETIRING.

I’ll give you a brief moment to sigh.  Okay, really I am the one…. <SIGH>

The Apple of My Eye stamp set is retiring, the Alphabet Rotary Stamp is retiring. <GASP!> That little rotary stamp is one of the best gems.  The Schoolhouse Designer Series Paper- Retiring!

There ya have it.  It’s all going away… but lets not let it steal our joy and let’s create.

Create it!

Want to create it? Let’s get started…

  1. Fold a piece of Whisper White Thick cardstock in half (4-1/4 x 11).
  2. Adhere a piece of Whisper White cardstock (4 x 5-1/4) to the card base using dimensionals.
  3. Adhere a piece of Smoky Slate cardstock (3-3/4 x 5) to the Whisper White cardstock using Fast Fuse Adhesive.
  4. Adhere a piece of Schoolhouse DSP (2 x 4) to a piece of Real Red cardstock (2-1/4 x 4). Adhere to the Smoky Slate cardstock using Fast Fuse Adhesive.
  5. Die cut a scrap piece of Whisper White cardstock using the Tags & Labels Framelits.  Stamp the apple image using Real Red ink onto the die cut.  Stamp the thank you image using Basic Black Archival ink.
  6. Stamp the leaves and stem onto Whisper White cardstock scrap using Cucumber Crush ink and then fussy cut the images using Paper Snips.  Adhere the leaves and stem to the apple image using Glue Dots.
  7. Using Alphabet Rotary Stamp, spell the word “teacher” or anything you want, ink the rotary using Whisper White ink and stamp onto Basic Black cardstock scrap. Pour White Embossing Powder over image, heat with Heat Tool. Trim around the word as close as you can using Paper Snips.
  8. Attach Tag onto card front using dimensionals.
  9. Using a piece of White Jute Ribbon (16″ long), separate the threads and use one thread to coil underneath the embossed word.  Keep in place using a Glue Dot.  Place embossed word over ribbon.  Ta-Da! Complete.

Show Appreciation

As I wrap up today’s post, I would challenge you to take a minute and thank a teacher.

We have been overly blessed with the teachers we’ve had for our kids.  There was one that I had a love/hate relationship for, but overall our kids have been blessed with the kindest and most caring teachers. I really can’t thank them enough for what they do.

Even if making a handmade gift is out of the question, just a simple “Thank You!” goes a long long way.  They need to hear it from us.

In Other News

My stamp room is a TRAIN WRECK! I turned it upside down yesterday pulling my retired products off my shelf.  I was thinking about doing a Periscope or Live Facebook video thingie but I totally chicken out.  Truly, half the day I’m in my pajama’s with my hair a complete disaster looking like a homeless person.  Not kidding.

If you follow me on either platform…. Well.  You might see me.  Might.  Then again, I could be a big fat chicken.  Sigh.

Love you guys!

All New Stamps in the Mail

All New Stamps in the Mail

Time for another month of Stamps in the Mail and I’m pretty excited.

This could be my favorite Stamps in the Mail yet.

Okay, maybe I say that every single time, but really…. this is pretty AWESOME.

Apple of My Eye

As I was preparing which stamp set I would use (always a fun task) I wasn’t sure what to use.  I have a cabinet filled with luscious stamps all crying to be used and the one I was bound to pick was going to get a ton of play time.

The Apple of My Eye stamp set is one that I loved right away when the new Occasions Catalog went live in January.  Once I had it in my hot little hands I struggled to use it, but then again that’s been an ongoing problem.

Yesterday my house was finally quiet.  No one decided to stay home and I had no place to go.  Well, actually that was a forced situation as Russ had my car because he had an accident on Monday.  That’s another story I’ll tell you later but he is fine, his truck needs a little work.

I started stamping with the Apple of My Eye stamp set and the ideas kept running.  Before I knew it I had 8 cards completed and every single one of them made my heart happy.

I’m sharing one of the cards today because I couldn’t contain my excitement.

Stamps in the Mail, Apple of My Eye Stamp set, Stampin' Up!

This is just a bonus project that I created for Stamps in the Mail. The fun part is how I created that color pattern on the pear image.  I almost wanted to EAT IT.

Stamps in the Mail, Apple of My Eye Stamp set, Stampin' Up!

This stamp set is perfect for Spring, Summer and really any occasion.  This is why I love it for Stamps in the Mail.  It’s a versatile stamp set that can give you a lot of bang for your buck.

I have to admit a little giddiness last night when I laid my head on my pillow for many reasons-

  • I haven’t made that many cards in a day in FOR-EVAH!
  • The ideas flowed like maple syrup.  EASY.  This hasn’t been the case with creating lately.
  • They are SO pretty and every single card makes me happy!
  • My happiness meter escalated to the top yesterday.  Creating brings me joy.  Sharing my creating process is the epitome of that happiness.  That’s right.  Inspiring you to create and seeing YOUR joy is truly happiness.

PS- The tale of our Monday…..

Monday Blues

Monday was a Monday.

Russ had just picked up Brandon and 3 other teens to come to our home so the kids could work on a cooking project for Spanish class.

Out of the blue a driver came from the center lane into the right lane in front of Russ to make a quick turn into a pawn shop and russ ran into them.  Luckily no one was injured.  After waiting for an hour for the police to arrive (non emergency) I went and picked up all the kids to bring them home.  Russ ended up waiting another 1.5 hours for the police.

We are thankful that everyone is okay, including the other driver who was charged with crossing lanes.

Now, the tough part.  The truck goes back in the shop. Yes, back in.  Russ hit a deer in January and caused damage to the hood.  I just got my car back Friday after a fender bender in February.  That took two weeks to fix.  As we left with my car last Friday we joked that while the shop did GREAT work, we didn’t want to see them again.

Russ went to see them AGAIN.

They must LOVE us.

Russ’ car shouldn’t be driven as the bumper is rubbing on his tire.  So, back to one car and why I was stuck at home to create.  It’s not all bad, really!

XOXOXO

This Color Combination Could Be Tough

This Color Combination Could Be Tough

I’ve been sifting through a few color combinations trying to change up things as I create.

Do you ever find yourself using the same colors all the time?

I don’t notice it right away until all of a sudden I look at the pile of cardstock scraps near my desk and think to myself… WOW.  The same colors are used frequently.

One of my favorite Pinterest boards I have and pin to frequently is my Color Combinations board.  You can see it here.  It’s LOADED with colors.

I decided to pull a color off my ink shelf that has barely been used.  In fact I think it’s been used ONCE.  EEK.

Cucumber Crush is not on my favorite list of colors but I love a good challenge and wanted to see what colors I could pair it up with.  I thought it would be fun to challenge you too!

Ready for a weekend challenge?

Cucumber Crush -Color Combination

Color Combination, Apple of my Eye, Stampin' Up!

Are you thinking SUMMER? That’s what I instantly thought of when I looked at these four colors together.  It screams summer.

I thought of citrus, watermelon, and swimsuits to be honest.

Here is what I created using this combination.

Color Combination, Apple of my Eye, Stampin' Up!

The Apple of My Eye stamp set was top of my list.  Think lemons, limes, oranges and sweet slice of watermelon.  YUM.

Color Combination, Apple of my Eye, Stampin' Up!

Tips & Tricks

  • Stamp the round citrus image in all four colors onto Whisper White cardstock.
  • Punch using the 1-1/2 or 1-3/4 Circle Punch and then cut in half.
  • Create a tag using Crumb Cake cardstock and the Ornate Tag Topper punch
  • Attach the Citrus halves to the tag using Snail Adhesive and alternating with dimensionals.
  • Add a Gold Foil Doily for a little extra punch of color.

Confession Time….

You are not going to believe this…

As I was typing this I was looking to see what size punch I used for the citrus image. I noticed the Idea Book & Catalog states to use the 1-1/2 circle punch.

Quick thought to myself was… “Silly Stampin’ Up!  We don’t have a 1-1/2″ Circle Punch!”

Then I flipped to the pages filled with our punches.

OH MY GOSH…..

WE DO have a 1-1/2″ Circle punch.

We’ve had this since JUNE!!! Where I have been??? How did I miss this???

Just when you think you know everything in the catalog- BOOM! You don’t.

Friends… You know what I’m ordering ASAP?

Yes. That. Punch!

Sigh…

Color Combination, Apple of my Eye, Stampin' Up!

Here is the good thing.  I managed well with the 1-3/4″ Circle Punch but I know the 1-1/2″ Circle punch is going to be AMAZING for layering.  Oh the opportunities I have missed.

Color Combination, Apple of my Eye, Stampin' Up!

It’s a good thing this is Friday.  It’s been a crazy week of crazy and I’m ending my Friday on a great note knowing that I have another tool coming my way.

Apple of My Eye

It’s time for you to take this color combination and make it happen.  I hope you will share with me because I love when you do.

Create something fantastic this weekend and most of all, enjoy the process.

Apple of My Eye

Apple of My Eye

While the phrase might sound corny, I bet we’ve all said it to someone… right?

I am 100% positive I’ve said this to the Prince and my gems many times.  They love those kind of things.

Now with the stamp set Apple of My Eye, we can create a project around this phrase and they can always know they are the apple of our eyes.

Adding the burlap reminded me of having all my apples together in a pretty basket. What do you think?

Apple of My Eye, Stampin' Up!, Kimberly Van Diepen

I added the polka dots from the What’s Your Type stamp set then coordinated it with the Designer Series Paper- It’s My Party which has a pattern with Polka Dots.

I had to add the doily… it’s an obsession that I need an intervention for.  Not kidding.

Apple of My Eye, Stampin' Up!, Kimberly Van Diepen

Lastly, I tapped a little ink spray over the entire project to give it a bit of texture. (Make sure to read my blog on Friday… when I share a complete disaster of OVER spraying a project and it looks like a murder scene! It’s sure to start your weekend with a belly laugh-or two!)

Of course there are many ways to use the Apple of My Eye stamp set and I can’t wait to share more ideas with you.  It’s one that will get a ton of use in my stamp room as it’s one of my favs.  Here are a trio of beautiful cards from Stampin’ Up!
