Little Known Ways to Embellish a Card

Embellish Cards with Ease

Do you struggle with applying embellishments to your cards?

Today we are going to look at little known ways to apply embellishments.

What I Call Embellishments

Sometimes we can be quick to think that embellishments are particular products.

For instance, my brain instantly thinks of the following products when I hear the word embellishments

  • ribbon
  • buttons
  • enamel dots
  • twine
  • doilies (let’s face it… I can’t live without these!)

While these are all my favorites and used frequently, I have a few others that I love and use more and possibly not thought of as embellishments.

  • paper – YES! SO many great ways to use paper as an embellishment
  • staples – I use them ALL the time.
  • die cuts
  • punches

Embellishing Can Be Simple

Embellish, Biggest Birthday Ever, Stampin' Up!

If you are a new stamper these little tips will help you when creating.  I remember when I first started stamping the one thing I didn’t have a lot of on hand was embellishments.

One of the things I learned early was to use paper to embellish.  Adding layers is simple with cardstock and even better when you can add texture to the cardstock and incorporate the layers.

Cardstock Banners

Banners are one of my go to favorites.  I love the many ways you can create a banner with a simple strip of cardstock.  I can fold it, create a “v” on the ends of them and even staple it where it needs to go.

Die cuts are another great way to embellish.  Die cuts can add texture to any project and depending on the die cut or framelit you use, it will add layering.

The Wish Big Framelits were perfect for this as each little piece added another layer of frosting, a cherry and even different slices to the big ole cake.

Don’t forget that a doily can add the perfect touch to a card.  Another favorite is the Texture Impressions Embossing Folders.  The Polka Dots are an all time favorite because it coordinates with so many things.  It’s definitely a WIN WIN.

Another Cardstock Use- Double It!

Embellish, Biggest Birthday Ever, Stampin' Up!

Adding layers can be as simple as using a double mat on a card.  I love to use a double mat of the same color which gives the card beautiful dimension.

You might be thinking…. what a waste of paper.

Here is my thought, and granite it’s only my opinion… paper or cardstock is one of the cheapest embellishments we have and provides the dimension so easily.

Think of doubling the cardstock on your die cuts.

Embellish, Biggest Birthday Ever, Stampin' Up!

For this card if you look at the star you will notice that is not a single piece of cardstock.  The star was layered three times.

First I’ll tell you this was due to a mistake I had made.  Yep.  It’s one of those times a mistake turned into a treasure.

By triple layering the die cut it gives great dimension and makes the star appear like a thick embellishment.  SIMPLE addition and fun.

Adding twine behind the star along with a doily again not only adds a fun way to embellish the card but it also added simple embellishments.

Remember, a staple not only holds your pieces together but you can also color them quickly with a sharpie to accent them.

Using a stapler has been one of my favorite tools and definitely adds ease to creating for this lazy stamper that I am.

Really.. I am.

Biggest Birthday Ever Made Simple

Today’s cards use the Biggest Birthday Ever stamp set.  I also shared two cards on Friday using this set HERE.  My goal in sharing this stamp set was for a few reasons:

  • Versatility- Biggest Birthday Ever stamp set doesn’t have to be ALL birthday.  You can use the stars for a baby card or tell anyone they are a super star on other days besides a birthday.  You can create clouds, or and ice cream cone… the ideas are endless.
  • Show how you can use the framelits as embellishments.
  • Share simple everyday embellishments

Quick Tip

One of my FAVORITE embellishments to play with right now is the 5/8″ Burlap Ribbon.  When you pull the threads on this burlap you are left with a very nice workable twine.  This is the twine I have been using ALL the time.  I love our Linen Thread, but this has a thickness just a smidge more than Linen Thread provides.  Try it.  You will see how easily this twine is to wrap and play with.

Your Turn To Create

I challenge you today to embellish your cards using cardstock.  Try a banner, or fold one end of the banner to create a unique look.  Take a framelit and triple stack to create dimension.

The journey of embellishing begins with trying.  Try something new and fun to add a little uniqueness to a card.

Oh, The Places You Will Go for Pokemon

Oh, The Places You Will Go for Pokemon

Pokemon Go, have you heard about this latest craze?

When I noticed my Facebook feed lighting up with people chasing Pokemon, I had to do a little research.  It was pretty much all downhill from there.

Places You’ll Go

I’ve never been a Pokemon lover, but after playing with this silly app and watching my kids get outside and play I had a change of heart.  The real change of heart came yesterday while the Prince and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at Panera Bread and he was catching Pokemon.

Now wait- I know this seems a bit crazy. The fact that we are having lunch and he’s shooting poke balls at invisible creatures.  I sat there holding my sides from the amount of laughing I was doing.  The craziest thing was the conversation started while OTHER people were doing the same thing next to us.  We were TALKING to strangers.

Game Changer!

Friends, this silly game that people are laughing at (myself included) is genius.

Russ and I are pretty social people and we will talk to anyone but on a normal day, sitting at a restaurant we would sit quietly, eat and leave.  Not this time. As he was playing his silly game and I was laughing, the people around us were doing the same thing. We started laughing together.  We started talking about the game.

This is where the game changer comes into play.  You see this game has special places (monuments) that you can collect poke balls and such (I don’t quite understand all of it) but these special places are churches.

We started to talk about this part of the game which led us to talking about the churches we attend which led to even more conversation. There was dialogue.  Folks, this doesn’t normally happen to us at a restaurant.

Social Game = Truly Social!

When Russ and I got back into our car (after catching many Pokemon of course) we sat and looked at each other giggling.  To sit in a restaurant where everyone minds their own business and no one speaks to each other and we just witnessed the opposite.  Not to mention as my kids were playing they had to walk OUTSIDE to catch these silly Pokemon things.  They had to MOVE.

Seriously, my kids (when home) sit on their devices and watch YouTube- all day if I let them. They were excited to walk around the block and farther to catch a Pokemon.  Wait… there is more.  There are other kids (and adults) outside doing the same thing.  Now they are being social. Actually talking to REAL LIVE people.

This is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen…

Be Happy

I’ve already seen some negative postings about this silly game but I have to tell you, I’m kinda giddy.  I have found joy in watching these people catch Pokemon and be happy.  With so much sadness around the world lately, people are happy catching a Pokemon!

Let me tell you about happy…. This morning my husband woke up and as he walked into the kitchen his first statement to me was, “I just caught a Pokemon before my first cup of coffee! Today is going to be a great day!”  Mind you, I about spit out my coffee over the silliness of this but the day did turn out to be amazing. The fact that my 45 yr old husband is catching Pokemon that early is hysterical.

Yes, we need to be careful.  No, you shouldn’t  drive and catch Pokemon.  But lets not forget that the silly game is bringing happiness.  Lets not forget it’s getting kids to MOVE.  Yes, they might still have their devices, but at least they are outdoors.  At least they are conversing and having fun with other people.  Just be happy folks.  Life is SHORT.

Be Crafty!

When I’m not searching for Pokemon I can be crafty.  What better set than the Places You’ll Go stamp set?

Pokemon, Stampin' Up!

This stamp set rocks my crafty world.

First, the greetings.  They are fantastic and the fonts make me want to dance, a lot.  They are perfection. Look at how the letters flow!  AHHHHHHHH!!!!

Second, the globe.  I love love love vintage globes and own a few to many.  I love this globe and how creative you can be with it.

Tips & Tricks

Pokemon, Stampin' Up!

I didn’t want to take away too much from the images because I love them so much.  I did add a few of my favorite things to the globe.

  • The inside of the globe was colored using 3 sponge daubers and the following inks: Sahara Sand, Island Indigo, and Pool Party.  I wanted the effect of land and water.  Easy enough with a little sponging.
  • I added a very small piece of a Delicate Doily and Linen Thread.  I also added a button from our Classy Designer Buttons.
  • The Enamel Shapes are perfect for adding a small embellishment with a great WOW factor.

Anything Better than Happy Happenings

Anything Better than Happy Happenings

It’s been an amazing week of happy happenings in our home over Spring break.

Could there be anything better? I don’t think so.

We’ve rested.

We’ve been together.

My list could go on about the happy happenings but I think you get the gist of it.

Our week ended on a fantastic note of course- Easter.  I must say that was the most special day of all, despite Alexis and I catching colds.  Yes.  Sick again!

The teenagers have managed to keep me going this week despite the gloomy weather and the time spent with them was needed by me.  Mall trips, beach trips, watching movies.  It was busy but I loved having them home and near me.  There have been many times I’ve looked forward to a school break being over and the kids getting back into their routines but this time I am not.  I wish the break was longer.  It’s made me reflect on how quickly they are growing up and them wanting to do more things with their friends- not mom.

It’s good.

It’s part of life.

It’s going to happen.

But I don’t like it.  I had to shout that.

Monday means back to the routine.  Mom back to the office to create…. and do taxes.  Kids back to school.  Russ back to work.  Back to all of THAT.  Sigh…. I guess it’s time for me to adult again.  Pffft.  It’s time.

Happy Happenings

Funny how the stamp set I used coincides with my happenings- it’s happy!!

Happy Happenings, Stampin' Up!

I created this last week prior to the kids going on Spring break and I needed a congrats card.  Happy Happenings has some awesome greetings and came in handy for this card.

Tips & Tricks

A fun trick for this card was creating dimension with my star punches.

To create more dimension,  punch out 3 stars from each color.  Glue the stars together using  Tombow Multipurpose Liquid Glue.  Once they are dry  sponge around each star with the coordinating color.

This will make the punches thicker and stand out a little more.

One last tip- the metal stars that you see on this card came from the So Lovely Project Kit.  You can see a quick link to this product below.  I LOVE this kit for the cards that you can create and the embellishments are amazing.

Lastly…. did you notice I snuck in a little bit of Cucumber Crush cardstock? It’s growing on me.  It’s going to be a great color for Summer cards and Project Life.

You can see all of the products I used for this card below.

Friday Sketch- TGIF Challenge

Friday Sketch- TGIF Challenge

Oh boy!  Get ready for a Friday Sketch!

I decided last week I did not have enough baby cards on hand so I used this sketch to create a neutral baby card.

I worked with the Go Wild DSP stack that has been sitting on my shelf collecting a bit of dust.  Hello!  What is WRONG with me.  This is the cutest paper stack.  So many cute designs and perfect for my giraffe.

Sketch Challenge, TGIF, Stampin' Up!

I used the Zoo Babies stamp set and the animals in this set are adorable.  I love how the giraffe coordinates with the paper and the circles on the giraffe coordinates with my Tangelo Twist Washi.  Win Win.

High Five- I’m Working!

High Five- I’m Working!

That title alone should make your eyes POP out.

I’ve been in my stamp room for about a good week and a half working daily on something.  It’s felt so good to feel the urge to create and not have that crazy “I’ve lost my MOJO” feeling.  If you’ve had it you get it.

The ideas are flowing and now it’s just taking the time to put the paper together and most importantly share it with you.

That Thing You Did stamp set, Stampin' Up! I thought this card would be perfect to showcase today because I’m giving myself a HIGH FIVE!

That Thing You Did stamp set was perfect with the high five image.  I also used the Stamp a Bag stamp set on the cardstock strips to add a bit of texture.

That Thing You Did stamp set, Stampin' Up!
You can see there are lots of little things added and all the supplies are listed below.

I’m off to work on swaps for the Stampin’ Up! convention that I leave in 2 days for.  I’ve been pumping out MASSIVE paper and my stamp room looks like an explosion occurred.  Honestly, I’m not complaining.

I had to take a second to calm down this sweet pooch.  We’ve had bad thunderstorms roll in the last few days and Brin is not tolerating them well.

Brin

Stay tuned.  I’ll be updating on here and on my Facebook Page all the convention goodies and news.  Don’t miss it….
OH>>>> and don’t faint… I’m also working on my newsletter.  You don’t want to miss out on that.  It’s full of GREAT project ideas.  XO

Oh My #2>>>> I’m going to be answering email while I’m away too.  There is a long list of beautiful people I need to respond too.  It’s coming… Slowly…
