Card Fail and Re-Do!

Card Fail and Re-Do!

It happens more than people think inside this stamp room of mine.

It’s the final moments of creating the card.  All is going beautifully well.  I’m just adding some finishing touches and BAM… RUINED. I mean RUINED.

There are many many cards that have almost hit the trash but somehow I have saved… until this card.  It was a complete disaster and for a challenge card no less.

Let me share….

First, today is Friday so that means it’s time for a TGIF challenge.  It’s a super fun sketch I think you will love.

Card Fail, TGIF Challenge, Stampin' Up!

I started this card using the Beautiful Ride stamp set.  I love this bug car and the other images that go with this set are amazing fun.

Beautiful Ride, TGIF Challenge, Stampin' Up!

Once I had everything watercolored and the entire card set in place and adhered down I thought it needed one more thing… a little splatter.  It’s like an obsession I have.  Kinda like my obsession with doily’s.  I also love me some splatter.  Until it’s out of control like this…

Beautiful Ride, TGIF Challenge, Stampin' Up!

Now my couple looks like they are part of a murder scene.  Who knew Watermelon Wonder ink could look like a bloody mess? I tried to save the card by re-doing the couple.  Nope.  The windows on the bug car were to far gone.  It didn’t look pretty at all.  Most of the time when this happens I have to walk away and gather my thoughts because I’m so mad at myself.  Not this card.  I laughed so hard I almost wet my pants.  This was FUNNY!!

So, I started from scratch.  A complete re-do!

Beautiful Ride, TGIF Challenge, Stampin' Up!

Much cleaner.  No more murder scene.  Just a lovely couple probably enjoying a cozy moment alone.

Beautiful Ride, TGIF Challenge, Stampin' Up!

Tips & Tricks

I used Watercolor Paper and Basic Black Archival Ink to watercolor the Bug and couple images.  One tip before you start watercoloring, heat set the images.   I stamp the images and then I take my heat tool over them to make sure they are good and dry.

The images are watercolored using an Aqua Painter and Inks.  I used Watermelon Wonder for the Bug Car.  You can see all the inks used in the supply list below.

When I first stamped the stars they were really bright using Daffodil Delight. When I was re-creating this card I changed the ink to So Saffron (had to bust out a duster on that ink pad!) Using that color was much softer. Then I added a Vellum overlay to create an even more softer look.

What do you think? Notice the re-created card has NO splatter.  I thought I would not risk it a second time.

Would love to hear from you!  Plus, don’t forget to play along in the challenge.  You can see what the other designers created HERE and play along.

Family News

I’m traveling to Atlanta as you are reading this.  Alexis has her first gym meet of the season.  It’s just the two of us traveling and I cherish these moments with her.  It’s a big weekend for her as she becomes an official teenager on Sunday.  My little peach is 13.  So many of you have watched this girl grow up.  Wanna see a blast from the past? Click on a few of these links below if you have the time.  It makes my heart skip a beat. Okay, actually I have cried looking back at these. Some are funny stories, some are tender moments. Love Bug and Weddings!

Love Bug and Weddings!

Oh dear!  Quite possibly I found a stamp set that rocked my world in a crazy way.

I’ve secretly always wanted a bug car.  I think they are the cutest cars ever.  Typically its not so much the body of this car that intrigues me but the colors and of course the added eye lashes that I see people add always make me want it even more.  Yes. That stays between me and you.

I was creating Saturday and had a wedding card on my list of “need to create.”  When I was going through my pile of stamps there were many that stuck out and were easy to use for a wedding card but this couple that is getting married are young and hip.  They needed young and hip.  They needed a bug car.  <grin>

Beautiful Ride

Love Bugs, Beautiful Ride, Stampin' Up!

Can this bug car stamp be any cuter? I love the greetings and the accessories that go along with the this car. The trailing cans was added perfection for this card.

Create It!

This stamp set, Beautiful Ride will be available on January 5th.  I used another stamp set called Timeless Textures that I’ve featured a few other times this month and it’s going to be a MUST HAVE stamp set for your collection.

I stamped the love bug and luggage onto Watercolor paper and then used my Aqua Painter along with inks to watercolor.  Before stamping the “love bug” onto the car door I used my heat tool to make sure the ink was good and dried.  I fussy cut the car and was able to stamp the trailing cans easily before I adhered the car down.  You can see the Timeless Texture images under the car to give the road effect as well as a few splatter areas.

Love Bugs and Weddings, Beautiful Ride, Stampin' Up!

I loved that luggage on top of the love bug.

Love Bugs and Weddings, Beautiful Ride, Stampin' Up!Of course a card is never complete without an envelope.  It was stamped and ready to deliver.

While this set has some time before it’s availability you CAN get your hands on this set if you want.

Kimberly Van Diepen Stampin' Up! Demonstrator

Well friends, I’m pretty sure I probably won’t be sporting a bug car anytime soon but I can live vicariously through the people that are driving them.  They may wonder why I stare.  I’ll be dreaming its me behind the wheel.

Thanks for stopping by and tell me what you think of this card today.

Love Is In The Air!

Around my neck of the woods love is in the air and weddings are happening.

We are excited in our family that my cousin is about to get married to his beautiful bride.  They are young in love and I’m pretty sure most of us tried to talk them out of getting hitched… but they weren’t hearing any of it.  It’s happening.

Russ and I probably were not the best to talk with them since we knew each other a whopping 4 months before we landed in front of the Justice of the Peace to exchange our vows.  Something in our souls I guess… we knew we were soul mates.  Of course everyone thought for sure a baby was on the way.  HA. Not for another 5 years did we bring a wee one into the picture.  Kinda funny.  Really put a stop to all rumors quickly.  We like to keep people thinking.

Today we celebrated the bride to be with a fun bridal shower.  Of course I had the gift all ready and wrapped and about 2 hours prior to leaving I thought about the card.  Me, the card maker did NOT have a card for a wedding or bride.  I was still in my Pj’s, hair a disaster… I needed something QUICK.

Here is what I came up with using an old vintage music sheet.  It was perfect for this couple because they have a love of music.

Big News stamp set, Stampin' Up!, Kimberly Van Diepen

Tips & Tricks

A simple circle framelit to cut the music sheet started this card.  Then I added the torn doily over it.  I used a set that is one of my fav’s because it has so many occasions in it: Big News! This set is on page 100 of the catalog and it covers birthdays, weddings, Thank you’s, Congrats, and BABY. That’s not all… it covers awesomeness.  Umm hello… that’s the best ever!  Telling someone they are awesomeness is perfect.  You can find this set HERE.  It’s really a great one.

Big News stamp set, Stampin' Up!, Kimberly Van Diepen

I’m using the NEW Archival Black Ink and I’m loving how CRISP it stamps.  You can see above I used it to stamp “Happily Ever After.”  It’s the BLACK you NEED.  Grab it HERE.

Lastly, I placed a few metallic sequins around and did a little gold splatter.  It was a perfect ending to my happily ever after card.  What do you think?

Here is the mess I’m in right now….

Cheer All Year stamp set, Stampin' Up!, Kimberly Van Diepen

Yes, I’m currently cutting 110 of the cutest bats you have ever seen.  Why did I have to choose something I had to cut??? UGH.  I’m working on my Founders Circle Swaps so they are going to a great place.  EEP.  I’m pretty excited about them and promise to share in a few days.  Meanwhile… I’m still cutting.  I have about 40 to go and I leave on Wednesday.  OH MY WORD…

Tag Topper Punch | Stampin’ Up!

Tag Topper Punch | Stampin’ Up!

There are numerous ways you can get creative with the Tag Topper punch from Stampin’ Up!  At my stamp club this month we made two cards each with different techniques using each of the Tag Topper punches.

Tag Topper Punch, Stampin' Up!

Here you can see using the Tag Topper punch as a fun fold for a card.

By adding a few fun embellishments on the Tag Topper punch it completes the card.

Tag Topper Punch, Stampin' Up!

Create with Kimberly Van Diepen

Let’s Create!

  1. Fold Soft Suede cardstock 4 1/4 x 11 in half and texture emboss with your favorite texture embossing folder.  I used Lovely Lace.
  2. Adhere a piece of Moonlight DSP 2 x 4 1/4 to the right side of the card.
  3. Adhere a piece of Early Espresso cardstock 1/4 x 4 1/4 to the edge of the DSP.
  4. Cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock 1 7/8 x 10.  Punch one end using the Scalloped Tag Topper.
  5. Adhere the straight edge of the Tag Topper on the inside of the cardstock as shown in the photo above.
  6. Fold the remaining Tag Topper over the front of the card.  Give a nice crease using your bone folder.
  7. Using Champagne Glitter paper and the Dotted Scallop punch, punch the Glitter paper so the scallop edge fits the length of the Tag Topper on the front of the card.
  8. Using Early Espresso ink, stamp the greeting from Big News stamp set.  Stamp a greeting on the inside of the Tag Topper.
  9. Punch a Bitty Butterfly from Champagne Glitter paper and adhere to the Tag Topper using a Mini Glue Dot.
  10. Cut a Tea Lace Doily in half.  Adhere to the backside of the Tag Topper to fit the card front.
  11. Punch a circle using Early Espresso cardstock and the Circle Framelits.  Adhere to the back of the Tea Lace Doily.  See photo above.
  12. Wrap a piece of Early Espresso Seam Binding ribbon through the Tag Topper punch.  Wrap Early Espresso Bakers Twine (ON SALE THIS WEEK) around the Early Espresso twine and tie in a knot.

I love the bottom of the cake holder.  It's so delicate.  I used an excess piece of rubber from one of my stamp sets to create the large polka dots.  Love how that turned out and brought all the shapes together on this card.
