The Joys of Parenting!

The Joys of Parenting!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but parenting is not always a joy.

This week has been tough with my teenagers. Lucky for them they are cute!

You might be new to my blog and don’t let this title scare you.  I have something crafty and fun to share at the end of this post.

Let Them Fall

Over the last few months, Brandon has been struggling with one particular class, Honors Algebra 2.  I was watching his grades and asking him frequently what plan he had in place to get help.  I even went as far as contacting the teacher about tutoring.  However, Brandon felt like he could handle this struggle on his own.  That’s when I watched him fall flat on his face.  It was time he learned the hard way.

Don’t get me wrong.  This was not an easy task on my part.  I don’t particularly enjoy watching my kids fail at something, but when they seem to know EVERYTHING… it was time to let him be in control so he could finally see I’m not as stupid as he thinks.

Taking the Easy Road

This week Brandon approached Russ and I that he was going to drop out of Honors Algebra 2 and take the regular Algebra 2.  I, as well as the school counselor, might have considered this an option if he had done the class assignments and showed an ounce of effort.  Sadly, not the case and Brandon was sure his idea of switching classes was EASY PEASY.

Not so fast Mister! The school counselor called me, and we both chatted that he is SUPER smart and the underlying problem is not spending an ounce of time on this class.  It appears the X-box was slightly hindering his attention.

The Meet Up!

I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t disappointed.  When parenting issues come up, I immediately think about the things I could have done differently.  I picked up Brandon at the bus stop and decided to take him to Starbucks.  I knew I couldn’t get CRAY CRAY in public. This was good for both of us.

He was mopey because his idea of switching classes was not happening.  Obviously,  this was ALL my fault. I let him spill his guts.  I shut my mouth (never happens) and listened.  Once he was done telling me how he should be able to switch classes, tutoring was a lost cause, and he was only going to fail… I stepped in.

When ZERO effort is applied, failure is going to happen.  Had my kid showed a little effort he wouldn’t be in this pickle.  But just like many adults I know, he wanted to QUIT because it didn’t go his way.  If I quit, I can take the easy way out.  That suited him fine. Dang! Only 15 and just like that you want the easy road? WHERE did you learn this, son?

Thankfully we were in a public setting.  It was a genius moment on my part.

Here is the problem, there is no easy way.  Life is not easy and quitting is not an option!

Over and over Brandon kept telling me he failed.  In my eyes failing was changing that class when you never put an ounce of effort into it.  What happened to FIGHTING for something you want?  Even if we do fail at the task, we learn to get back up and start over.

The Solution!

Obviously, Brandon did not get the solution he was hoping for.  Switching classes was not an option.  Had he made an effort, but struggled that would have been an entirely different situation.  However, you chose the easy road of NOT doing anything and expecting to get off easy.

Our house will be quiet with the gaming console in the off position for a little while.  Well, until we see an improvement in the grades and attitude.  Brandon seems to think the gaming community could end due to his parents whacko thinking.  I guess time will tell.

Meanwhile… I’ll be on tutoring pick up duty on Wednesdays and watching my young man learn how to gain control of his work ethic.

Alexis and I are heading to another gymnastics meet.  There is nothing better than spending a car ride with my daughter as she makes her selfies into strawberry, dog, and a fox face at least 100x and then falls asleep.  YAY me.

Parenting has not been a joy this week, but I love them more than they will ever understand.  While they may think I’m an awful parent  (this was said earlier this week) I will march on and know that I’m developing kinder, hard working human beings.  Life is not about taking the easy road.  They must learn to try and if you don’t succeed, try again.  Don’t give up!

Big Monster Hugs

This card couldn’t be more perfect!  Despite Brandon being angry over the situation, he is loved.  A giant monster hug will be perfect for him.  I created this card using the Yummy in My Tummy stamp set.

Parenting, Yummy in My Tummy, Stampin' Up!

Tips & Tricks

  • Create the large polka dot background by using the center piece of rubber in the Monster’s belly.  I used Pool Party and Smoky Slate ink.
  • The monster was stamped onto Watercolor Paper and colored using the Aqua Painter.

It’s Not Always About Being Foxy!

It’s Not Always About Being Foxy!

The new Stampin’ Up! stamp set Foxy Friends is a HUGE hit in the new Idea Book & Catalog and if you haven’t heard the buzz, just take a peek on Pinterest and you are bound to see it.

When I first had a glimpse of Foxy Friends I knew it was a must have.  Little critters are SO popular in the stamping community and Stampin’ Up! did a great job with the cuteness factor with this set.

My Favorite Thing -Foxy Friends!

  • Tons of critters! It’s not just about a fox.  Cat, Raccoon, Deer… these are just a few.
  • Fantastic coordinating products- Designer Paper and punch!
  • No greetings- GASP!  You might think I’m nuts but I love that I can choose what greeting to mix and match with this set.

These are just a few of my favorite things.  I’m excited to have this set in my collection and I know it’s going to be one that I’ll grab frequently with so many options to create.

How About a Raccoon?

Foxy Friends, Stampin' Up!

When I started creating this card I started with the Designer Paper.  I love colors of this particular sheet and I wanted to build my card around it.  Normally I start with the image, but this Designer Series Paper stack is filled with fun colors and patterns.

Once I found the paper, I decided the raccoon would be a perfect match.

Creating him Mr. Raccoon was simple and I love is little face.  What do you think?

Tips & Tricks

Foxy Friends, Stampin' Up!

Here are a few tips & tricks when creating the Mr. Raccoon.

  • The body was stamped in Smoky Slate ink.  The mask around his eyes was stamped using Basic Gray.  Eyes and nose (one image) was stamped using Basic Black along with his tale.
  • I used the Layering Circles Collection framelits to create the circle and scallop around the circle.  These Circles Collection framelits are quickly becoming one of my favorites.  The big circle measures 2-7/8.
  • The Hello image is from the Sunshine Sayings stamp set.  This has a fantastic collection of greetings in this set.  Once again my eyes are drawn to the wonderful fonts used.
  • The ribbon is brand new- Pool Party 3/8″ Stitched Satin Ribbon.  I zig zagged the ribbon and then placed my Hello tag over the ribbon and the entire layer of circles, ribbon, and tag were stapled together.
  • I used a small portion of the Delicate White Doily underneath the scallop circle.
  • The trees were stamped using Pear Pizzaz ink, and die cut using the Perfect Pines Framelits.

It Really Wasn’t a Secret!

Splitcoaststampers- Are you a Member?

I realize that inspiration comes from EVERYWHERE.  We are so lucky we have the resources for crafters today.

I remember when I first started with Stampin’ Up! my main source of inspiration was my Stampin’ Up! catalog or a crafting magazine.  In fact I never left a grocery store without picking up the latest issue of a magazine.

I miss the days of coming home with that magazine and brewing a cup of coffee and enjoying a few hours of being inspired on my couch!

Online Communities

Many moons ago (I think 2004) I became a part of an online community called SplitcoastStampers.  I was a huge part of the community and loved seeing so much inspiration.  Get this… I was even a gallery moderator back in the day.

When my business started to rise and time started to decrease, I spent less time there.

Over the last couple of years I became more involved and started uploading my projects again and use Splitcoast as a source of inspiration when I need a kick start to my own creative process.

Now… I didn’t mean to keep this a secret but somehow I missed telling anyone about this exciting news that happened 5 months ago.  Yes- back in January.

In January I was asked to be a part of SplitcoastStampers Dirty Dozen Design Team.  WHOA!

This was HUGE for me.

A little back story….

I remember when the Dirty Dozen was introduced on SplitcoastStampers.  It was the elite stampers that we as community gushed over.  It was crafters that WOW’d you to an incredible level and pushed you to try new things.  Every month on the 15th we would wait for the unveiling of WHO the next member of this ELITE group would be joining the team.

Now I had been asked to join this team 12 years later after joining SplitcoastStampers.

I’m completely humbled and continue to be after the last 5 months.  It’s a 6 month term and it’s almost over.  It’s flown by.

Now the projects that I’ve created for this team are nestled into a private gallery.  It’s part of being a Splitcoast Fan Club Member.  If you are a member, you have access to the Dirty Dozen Gallery every month.  Each month the theme changes and there are TONS of challenges that YOU can take part in.

There are lots of benefits for being a fan club member besides seeing this gallery.  There are tons (like LOTS AND LOTS) of challenges and tutorials that you can play along with as well.

Sneak Peek

Today I wanted to share a few pieces that I’ve shared over the last 5 months.  It’s just a sneak peek.  I’ve uploaded tons of projects to my main gallery but there are a little over 30 projects that are exclusive.  If you are not a member of the Fan Club, I would look into it.  If you have stamp sets from years gone by, you would be able to see a ton of inspiration for that stamp set and MUCH more.  It’s a gem of a place to hang and you are bound to make a few friends along the way there too.

Just in case you are wondering… No, I get nothing if you join except a smile on my face.  I’m only telling you about it because I love to share.  I love to tell you about great resources that can inspire you.

Some of these projects below have products that will be retiring.

Dirty Dozen, Splitcoast Stampers, Stampin' Up!

Textured Embossed Vellum and Watercoloring on the same card almost makes me SQUEAL!

I die cut the butterfly using the Butterflies Thinlits on Watercolor paper and then did a quick brush of colors using my Aqua Painter over the butterfly.

I haven’t used this Bear Hugs stamp set much, but these bears are adorable and the options are endless.

Miss Lion sits on my desk.  When I look at her I say, “Hear me ROAR!”  She’s reminding me to be strong during times I feel defeated.

Hey, it happens. Pyramid Pals Thinlits are the bombdiggity.

Dirty Dozen, Splitcoast Stampers, Stampin' Up!

Shine bright like a diamond.  If you listen to Rhianna, then you know the song.  I believe our theme that month was music. Talk about stretching my creativity. OH WOW.

I have one more month on the team and then I become an Alumni. Once a DD always a DD.

It’s been an incredible ride and I’m grateful for SplitcoastStampers and the members who contribute their work.

If you want to become a Fan Club Member, click HERE and see the benefits.

I hope you had an amazing holiday weekend and thanks for letting me spill the beans.

XOXOXO

Oh No! Life Without These Favorites?

Oh No! Life Without These Favorites?

Life without some of my favorites of crafting supplies….

Yes, it’s that time of year when the retired list rolls out and I find myself rolling my eyes 1000x when I start to create and sadness overcomes my body knowing many of the greats are going away.

Don’t get me wrong, some retiring items I have no problem saying goodbye to.  Others take my breath away.

Today’s card has just about everything that made me GASP!  Truly, some of my favorite items.

Favorites, Hot Diggity Dog, Stampin' Up!

Hot Diggity Dog

I love animals! Dogs, cats, guinea pigs, fish… that’s pretty much the zoo I have in my house right now.

When there is any animal stamp set, I typically have it and especially a dog image.  Honestly, I’m a sucker when it comes to any dog image.

The Hot Diggity Dog stamp set has been a favorite not only for the dog images, but the greetings are so fun too.

Favorites, Hot Diggity Dog, Stampin' Up!

Can this dog be any sweeter? And the little flower on her head? Be still my heart!

Kraft & White Corrugated Paper

This past catalog season I’ve throughly enjoyed using our Kraft & White Corrugated Paper.  I love the texture that it gives to any project and excellent due to the two color choices- Kraft and White.

I added a simple strip of the Kraft Corrugated to break up the blues in the card.

Designer Buttons

Slowly over the last few years I’ve noticed a decrease in the use of buttons.  I’ve always loved them and how they look on cards. Stampin’ Up! has always had a fantastic selection of buttons and our designer buttons come in so many great colors that coordinate with our products.   WIN!

I used the Subtles Designers Buttons for this card and I love those teeny tiny buttons.  They are so so cute.

Favorites, Hot Diggity Dog, Stampin' Up!

Schoolhouse Designer Series Paper

There is an array of our Designer Series Papers that I have loved this year and one of my favorites has been the Schoolhouse Designer Paper.

This is a pattern paper that can be used in so many other ways outside of the “school” theme.  This card is a perfect example of that.

Favorites, Hot Diggity Dog, Stampin' Up!

While many of our favorites will be retiring, I know so many more new things are coming.  They are great things.  This is why I love papercrafting.  The constant roll over of new products is what keeps me excited even when my favorites are leaving.

One thing to keep in mind with retiring products is the “while supplies last!”  This is for all of our retiring products.  Currently there are quite a few of the items that are no longer available.  Contact me to check availability.

You can see all products used for the card above in the clickable links below.

Lastly, I wanted to share one last project I found from Stampin’ Up! using this stamp set and Designer Paper.  Truly, a match made in heaven.

Color Inspiration- Have You Tried This?

Color Inspiration

Color Inspiration is one of my biggest puzzle pieces when I sit down to create.

Once I know the stamp set I’m going to work with I love to go through my ink pads and play with the colors to see what I can come up with.  I like to browse my Pinterest Board of color as well, but sometimes it’s just as easy to sit some colors in front of me and see what’s calling my name.

My card today is way out of my normal color wheel and I hope you will try these colors on a project yourself.  I love how the Mint Macaron looks with the Blackberry Bliss and the Crumb Cake ALWAYS goes with everything.

Color Inspiration, Balloon Builders stamp set, Stampin' Up!

Create it!

If you are a fan of balloons, the stamp set Balloon Builders is for you.  There are tons and tons of balloon animals you can create with this set but lazy me kept it pretty simple…

Wait for it…

Yes.  I stamped a plain balloon.

Color Inspiration, Balloon Builders stamp set, Stampin' Up!

I started to get crazy but here is the problem….

Ya know the noises that the balloons make when the clown is making the animal balloons? It freaks me out.

Just thinking about the clown (not a fan) and then the twisting of the balloons….. AHHHHH! FREAK OUT.

I stamped a plain balloon and I kinda like it.

Color Inspiration, Balloon Builders stamp set, Stampin' Up!

The greeting is perfect for my teenage girl.  I thought it described her to a tee.  This will be a great card for her friends birthdays that are upcoming.  Teenagers, College students… this is a perfect set for them.

Color Inspiration, Balloon Builders stamp set, Stampin' Up!

Tips and Tricks

I stamped most of the balloons directly onto the Typeset Designer Paper and a few I stamped onto a scrap piece of the Typeset and punched using the Balloon Bouquet Punch. How fun is THAT?

I added a Linen Thread bow onto the main balloon and stuck a piece of Linen Thread behind the balloon to create the string for it.

The sequins came from the Love Blossoms Embellishment kit.  I love the colors of these sequins and they give off a purple hue when next to the Blackberry Bliss ink.  I stamped the balloon with the greeting onto Very Vanilla so I could make the greeting pop a little more than it being on the Typeset DSP.
